Samanden to Phalut

A two day hike to witness four of the world's five highest peaks.

A beautiful high-altitude journey from the secluded village of Samanden to the legendary summit of Phalut, passing through ancient Himalayan forests, traditional mountain settlements and the dramatic Singalila Ridge. This is a trek for travellers who want more than a conventional Himalayan itinerary — slower trails, quieter villages, authentic homestays and extraordinary mountain landscapes. Begin in the peaceful mountain village of Samanden before entering dense forests of oak, pine and rhododendron. The trail gradually climbs towards Gorkhey and then continues into the higher reaches of the Singalila landscape. As the forest begins to thin, the landscape opens into rolling high-altitude meadows and ridge walks. Finally, reach Phalut, approximately 3,600 m / 11,800 ft, where the Himalayan panorama becomes the reward for the climb. From the summit area, weather permitting, you can experience spectacular views towards Kanchenjunga and the Himalayan ranges. It is the only trail in India that gives you a front-row view of four of the world’s five highest peaks (Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu) simultaneously. From Phalut, Mt. Kanchenjunga feels like it is at a "stone's throw" distance (roughly 48 km in a straight line). This is the closest, largest, and most uninterrupted view of the famous Sleeping Buddha massif obtainable anywhere in the region. The proximity makes the giant mountain cluster appear truly humbling and massive compared to the distant views from lower points.

  • Best time to visitSPRING March – May Rhododendrons, fresh greenery and pleasant daytime temperatures. AUTUMN October – November Clearer mountain visibility and excellent conditions for Himalayan photography. EARLY WINTER Late November – December Cold conditions, crisp mountain air and possible snow around higher sections depending on the year. West Bengal Tourism specifically notes late October to mid-December as a particularly good period for clear snow-mountain views from Phalut. MONSOON Avoid planning the trek during periods of heavy monsoon rain because of slippery trails, poor visibility and changing mountain conditions. Final operating dates should always be confirmed against current forest, park and local authority conditions before booking.
  • AccessibilitySince the hike is in West Bengal one can reach Sammanden easily from Sikkim. Jorethang is a major town in South Sikkim and it takes two an half hours drive to reach Bhareng from Jorethnag. An hour hike from Bhareng through pine forest trails crossing stream that divides the two states. Once you cross the gentle stream one can either stay at Samanden or at Gorkhey.
  • Difficulty levelModerate to challenging

Hot water is subject to availability, simple local meals are served and there is limited moblie connectivity. "This is part of the character of the experience."
