A full day excursion to the monasteries in & around Gangtok
Explore Gangtok’s great monasteries with time to sit, observe and understand their living traditions.
Rumtek, Enchey and Lingdum are among the most important monasteries in and around Gangtok. Rather than a rushed stop, we give you time to sit with the space, observe daily monastic life and learn the history that shaped Sikkimese Buddhism.
- Enchey MonasteryA roughly 200-year-old Nyingma seat above the town, famous for its annual Cham mask dances and the blessings of the tantric master said to have flown here.
- Tsuglakhang MonasteryThe chapel of the Namgyal dynasty beside the former royal palace, and the stage for the great Pang Lhabsol festival.
- Do Drul Chorten & GompaOne of Sikkim’s most revered stupas, ringed by 108 prayer wheels, with a gompa housing images of Guru Padmasambhava.
- Gonjang MonasteryFounded in 1981 in the Nyingma tradition by a rinpoche recognised as a reincarnation of the Yolmo Terton.
- Lingdum / Ranka MonasteryA vast, serene monastery of the Zurmang Kagyu lineage, its wide courtyard alive with young monks.
- Rumtek MonasteryThe largest in Sikkim and seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage, modelled on Tibet’s Tsurphu Monastery and home to its Golden Stupa and rare sacred relics.
